4 Steps for Clean Hot Tub Water

4 Essential Steps to Keeping your Hot Tub Water Clean & Clear and Ready for Action

  1. Establish a proper pH level: The proper pH level is between 7.2 and 7.8. An easy way to find your pH level is to visit your local hot tub dealer and pick up some water test strips. All you have to do is simply drip the strip in the water, shake off the excess water, and compare the color to the chart on the back of the kit. Then adjust the levels as needed per the instructions.
  2. Measure total alkalinity of your spa: Again you will be using test strips for this exercise. The ideal alkalinity range is between 80 to 120 parts per million (ppm).
  3. Controlling the hardness of your water: Maintaining the appropriate water hardness helps to avoid equipment corrosion, scale, and water foaming. Use your test strips to check the calcium level, which should be between 100 and 250 ppm. If you have soft water, add more calcium. If you have hard water you’ll need to correct it by adding stain/scale control to the water.
  4. Sanitizing:  After following the above steps, your hot tub water should be properly balanced.  Next you'll want to sanitize the water using chlorine.  About 2 tablespoons should be enough to start off with. Sprinkling the chlorine over the filter area will make sure it gets circulated into the water through the jets.  You'll want chlorine levels to be at about 3 to 5 ppm.  Checking the water once or twice a week, and adding chlorine as necessary will help to keep your water fresh and enjoyable.
