Easy Ways to Stay Active in the Summer

Summertime isn't over yet! There are a few more weeks to enjoy the sunshine and longer days.

Although sitting at the pool every day sounds incredible, it’s also important to enjoy the warm weather while staying active.

Here are 5 great ways to get exercise outside in the summer:

1. Swimming. Getting some laps in is an excellent activity for all ages. It’s a great way to get your heart rate up without putting stress on your body. Depending on where you live, you may need to be in the pool if you’re trying to beat the heat. The best part about swimming is that it’s good for all levels as well. You can simply tread water, try breaststroke, or tackle freestyle. Whatever stroke or pool activity you chose, it’s important to "just keep swimming!"

2. Hiking. Tackling some elevation can be a very rewarding activity once you get to the top. Good views, fresh air, and an increased heart rate is sometimes all you need to feel accomplished on nice summer day! Visit All Trails to pick out a good around you, pack a few hardy snacks and water, and you’re all set to start your adventure. No hills or mountains near you? Don’t fret! A walk in your neighborhood or around town is always a nice way to get outside too. TIP: Don’t forget sunscreen or a hat to protect you from the strong UV rays.

3. Bike riding. With a nice breeze and the sun shining down on you, a long bike ride is hard to beat. This is another activity that is great for all ages and levels. Whether you go for a pleasure ride in town or opt for a vigorous workout, your legs and body will be thanking you. You have the option to use a road bike, mountain bike, e-bike, or hop on a cruiser for the day. Remember, always wear a helmet and be aware of your surroundings.

4. Jogging. Running can be difficult, but nothing worth doing comes easy, right? Pick your favorite music or podcast, get in the zone, and let the endorphins kick in in no time. Whether you run 1 mile or 10, jogging will help you build strong muscles, burn calories, and improve your fitness levels. Not much of a runner? No biggie. Walks are still a great way to get out and about while getting your blood flowing.

5. Water Sports. Enjoy a full day or weekend on a nearby reservoir, bay, or lake! Kayaking, canoeing, and paddle boarding are just a few ways to stay active while enjoying the water and relaxing. Many places offer rentals at a reasonable price at an hourly or daily rate. Need a little more excitement and are lucky enough to have access to a boat? Take it out for a spin and try parasailing, wakeboarding, or jet skiing! The possibilities are endless.

Exercise and heat can take it out of you! Your body is happy and healthy, but needs a break by the end of the day. Some days, the only thing getting you through your workout is the reassurance that you can slide into your Freeflow Spas hot tub, post-workout.
